If you’re lucky enough to be invited to a pool party at this amazing home brace yourself for a shock as the sparkling blue pool water has been replaced by a blood-red version that is going to amaze bathers.
All vampires will of course immediately fall in love with the pool area at this incredible Gothic-style mansion that’s like something out of a horror movie.
Everyone else is likely to be rendered speechless, at least for a moment, by the surprise colour of the water but the pool is just the start of the truly unique and sometimes bizarre design of this remarkable house.
The distinctive turreted house was the property star of Hollywood movie Cheaper By The Dozen but in 2016 it was sold for $6.5m to someone who you could definitely say adores Gothic design and style.
Kat Von D picked up the keys to her new Hollywood pad and began a striking interior design transformation that has created a home now marketed as a property that “might be the most interesting in the USA”.
Best known for her TLC channel reality show LA Ink, which chronicled her work as a tattoo artist and tattoo studio owner Kat is a very busy celebrity.
A model, recording artist, New York Times bestselling author, animal rights campaigner, and entrepreneur the Mexican-born Kat Von D is famous for her Gothic style and she brought it by the skipload to her new home six years ago.
What Kat purchased and is now back on the market is a three-storey Victorian mansion originally built in the 1890s by Isaac Newton Van Nuys who once owned the entire southern portion of the San Fernando Valley and after whom the US city of Van Nuys is named.
Located near Hancock Park, the home is close to the centre of Los Angeles, convenient local motorways and just a few miles from the entertainment zone of Hollywood Boulevard.
Famous neighbours in the past included celebrities from the ‘golden age’ of Hollywood including Howard Hughes, Mae West, Muhammad Ali, and Nat King Cole.

Nowadays if you lived here you’re likely to pop round to the homes of Antonio Banderas, George Takei, or Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao to borrow a cup of sugar or ask them to feed your cat while you’re away.
With a striking red-brick facade, balconies, and turrets the magical and mysterious estate is completely gated and sits on more than half an acre of manicured grounds with maze-like gardens and fountains.
As well as the horror movie swimming pool Kat has done an astounding job of redesigning the decor to fully and completely embrace the Gothic style throughout the 12,565-square-foot residence.
Every room in the house has been carefully styled with intricate woodwork, ornate details, moody colours, and glamorous touches such as gold accents and sparkling chandeliers.
The flow of the house means each statement room easily leads you into another with the grandest of grand salons connecting seamlessly to the library, den, and formal living and sitting rooms.
Then into the dining room that is lined with intricately-carved wood wall panelling and stained-glass windows, which then flows into the fully renovated chef-quality kitchen.
Even in the kitchen the Gothic style dominates with dark wood, ornate gold, a huge chandelier, and a carved cooker hood surely like no other in existence – it’s definitely not your standard B&Q or Wren range of kitchen units.
A hidden bar with hand-carved walls conceals a secret door that leads out to the pool and spa – looking at the colour of that pool surely a Bloody Mary is the most requested drink at this bar?
Maybe the most breathtaking bedroom suite, one of seven throughout the residence, is the one that features a custom-painted bat-themed mural and a statement fireplace.
Or maybe it’s the suite with the most luxurious four-poster bed ever draped in swathes of fabric under a gold gilt ceiling?
Help with your hunt for a home here:
The top floor provides a special living space that doubles as a theatre with a bar and kitchenette. Up here the stage is complete with original footlights and a dramatic turret side room.
The home’s systems are modern and updated, including the multi-zone heating and air-conditioning system which was painstakingly installed without disturbing the intricate original wood and plasterwork.
The estate also includes a two-bedroom, two bathroom carriage house above the garage.
Outside the garden is pristine with formal lawns, sun-drenched terraces, and a mini box-hedge maze and of course that ‘love it or loathe it’ blood-red pool.
But if a new owner is not keen on the red it shouldn’t be too much trouble to replace it with the more conventional clear water.
Although that will, of course, disappoint the vampires it might make it a bit more appealing to more party guests who prefer boring old blue.
The mansion is on the market for $15m, which is around £11m depending on the currency exchange rate, with Jamie Sher of The Sher Group and also featured on the celebrity homes section of website Top Ten Real Estate Deals.
