The former BBC Cymru Wales broadcasting house and studios on Llantrisant Road, Llandaff, Cardiff was once the pinnacle of broadcasting facilities.
But the landmark 1960s building and its surrounding structures have been reduced to rubble and the beginning of a new housing estate has been recently rising from the dust, and now the first phase of the site is on sale.
New home builder Taylor Wimpey acquired an interest in the Llandaff site in 2014, a year after the broadcaster announced its move to its new, purpose built £120m headquarters building in Central Square, opposite Cardiff Main Station.
Outline planning permission for up to 400 homes was granted by Cardiff County Council on November 5, 2015. Taylor Wimpey subsequently submitted a reserved matters planning application for 364 homes which was approved on November, 3 2016. The site purchase was completed in April 2021.
A further revised reserved matters application has been submitted which proposed a total of 377 homes which was approved on June 8, 2021.
Taylor Wimpey’s new development will also bring almost £1, 500, 000 in financial contributions to community infrastructure and facilities, such as local education services, highways and public open spaces.
Demolition work at the site commenced inside autumn 2021 after around 1, 000 BBC staff bid farewell to the old Broadcasting House after nearly 55 years at the studios. See more photos of the building being reduced to rubble here .
The land is now a new estate called Parc Llandaf, a mix of 377 new homes that will include blocks of one and two bedroom apartments, plus three, four plus five bedroom houses.
Parc Llandaf straddles Llantrisant Road and consists of 10. 5 acres at Broadcasting House and 6. 95 acres at Ty Oldfield on the opposite side of the street.
The design of the site by Downs Merrifield Architects, Cardiff includes a semi-circle of six-storey apartment blocks, a central square flanked by executive townhouses, and private streets that are a mix of detached, semi-detached and terraced homes across the two sites.
The first phase of the development, called Y Sgwâr, is now for sale via a dedicated sales executive at the company’s Gwêl yr Ynys site in Sully, with the Parc Llandaf onsite sales information centre due to open on January 7, 2023.
The company states that each home has been ‘thoughtfully designed with flexible living in mind with a distinct identity. The scenic Taff Trail runs alongside the advancement, giving residents easy access to nature and the nearby countryside. There are also a number of parks just a short walk from home, providing a safe space for families to enjoy the outdoors together’.
There are currently seven types of homes for sale and the price depends not just on the style and number of bedrooms and bathrooms, but also on the plot’s location within the development.
The Midford is a four bedroom, two bathroom, two parking spaces, detached house with a north-facing rear garden plot and costs £509, 995. For a superior position within the site, the same design of house has an asking price of £514, 995.
The particular Manford with a north-facing back garden has a larger four bedroom, two bathroom design plus two parking spaces and has a price tag associated with £569, 995. For a south-facing Manford house with a three vehicle drive the price rises to £579, 995.
The Dunham has the same 1, 385 square feet of living space as The Manford, although the design includes an integrated not detached garage, plus 4 bedrooms and two bathrooms. With a south-facing garden The particular Dunham has a £569, 995 purchase price.
